The American teenage wild card tandem of 19-year-old Melanie Oudin and 18-year-old Jack Sock took home the first championship trophy of the 2011 US Open yesterday, defeating the No. 8 seeds Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank, 7-6(4), 4-6, [10-8], in the mixed doubles final. It was the third time Oudin and Sock won a third-set super-tie-break in four completed matches. (They received a walkover in the semifinals.) With the win, Oudin, 19, and Sock, 18, become the youngest—and perhaps the most unheralded—tandem of the Open Era to capture the mixed doubles title, and just the 12th unseeded team to pull off the feat. The only other wild card team on record to win the US Open mixed doubles were Carly Gullickson and Travis Parrott in 2009.
The victory is also the second US Open championship for Sock in two years. He won the 2010 US Open boys’ singles title
