France’s Jo Wilfried Tsonga has reached the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time in his career after he downed American Mardy Fish in five sets 6-4 6-7 (5) 3-6 6-4 6-2.
The encounter lasted three hours and 42 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium today. The Frenchman fired 12 aces past Fish and he hit 51 winners. Tsonga’s best result at the US Open was a fourth round in 2009.
Mardy Fish was two sets to one up but Tsonga continued to dig deep. The French player turned the match around in the fourth set and 4-4 when he finally got a break. He closed out the fourth set 6-4.
Tsonga and Fish have never faced each other before this windy day. “The wind was really hard today. You play against yourself, against your opponent. It’s really difficult,” Tsonga said.
Fish who got treated for a knee strain before the start of the fifth set kept limping around the court. Jo-Wilfried got an early break in the fifth and closed out the match with a 6-2 set win.
The World No. 11 had a great grass court season this year being runner up at the Queen’s Club losing to hometown favourite Andy Murray in the final. Tsonga reached the semi-final of Wimbledon where he lost to Novak Djokovic. En route he took out Swiss Roger Federer in the quarterfinal.
Jo-Wifried will face the winner of Roger Federer and Juan Monaco of Argentina in the last eight of the US Open. Apart from beating Federer in the quarters of Wimbledon he also downed the former world number one at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Canada. The two played in the round of 16 and Tsonga came out on top in three sets.
With two runners up spots at Queen’s and Rotterdam, Tsonga is yet to win a title this season. His best Grand Slam result was at the 2008 Australian Open when he reached the final.
