World Number Three Roger Federer reached his 30th straight Grand Slam quarterfinal today when he blew away Argentinian Juan Monaco 6-1 6-2 6-0.
This evening’s match started almost at midnight due to the length of the matches during the day session. Luckily Federer could finish the match in one hour and 20 minutes and before the rain started to fall. “It’s crazy how our schedules change all the time. As tennis players, it makes it extremely difficult to be on our A game every single day. Something happens tonight, you see the women’s match, you warm up several times, you wait, maybe have to eat something, you relax again,” The former US Open Champion said.
Federer raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set in just 12 minutes. The five time US Open Champion hit 42 winners compared to Monaco’s 4. The Swiss star broke early again in the second set. A very frustrated Juan Monaco was making tons of unforced errors today. The third set was no contest at all as Federer again sprinted to a 5-0 lead.
“I played really well. crisp, nice. I felt fantastic. The crowed helped me a lot in this regard,” Roger said.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the number eleven seed is next for Roger. Tsonga took out American Mardy Fish in five sets today. The Frenchman has beaten Federer twice this year. The first time was in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon this year and the second time happened in the third round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Canada.
By beating Mardy Fish today Tsonga has made it to his first US Open quarterfinal. The man who resembles boxer Muhammad Ali has split from his long time coach Erik Winogradsky and is excited about being on his own and working things out on his own for a while. No immediate decision has been made to employ someone else.
Roger Federer knows and respects the Frenchman, “He’s a tough player and I’ve had some really good matches against him. It’s always crazy up and down, just like his match today against Mardy Fish. He’s an exciting player to play against, and I’m looking forward to it. He’s definitely on a good streak. I hope I can stop him this time.”
