Today’s win for Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes of India have moved them into the quarterfinals of the year’s US Open doubles event.
Bhupathi and Paes overcame fellow countryman Somdev Devvarman and Treat Conrad Huey of The Philippines in straight sets 6-4 7-5 in one hour and 32 minutes. The Indian team won 74 points compared to their opponents 61.
The No. 4 seeds will now take on the No. 9 seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland in the battle over a semi-final spot. The Polish duo had a tight match with British combination Jamie Delgado and Jonathan Marray. The Poles won 6-7 (5) 6-2 6-3.
Austrian Jurgen Melzer and his partner Philipp Petzschner of Germany ousted Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine and Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 (3) 6-3. The number nine seeds German/Austrian team will meet the winner of Michael Llodra of France and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and David Marrero of Spain and Andreas Seppi of Italy.
The Indo/Pak Express Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi also advanced yesterday into the last eight after a straight set win over Dick Norman of Belgium and Paul Hanley of Australia. India has three players in the quarterfinals this year, Leander Paes Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna.
In the bottom half of the draw Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez are waiting to take on The British team of Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins. The winner of that match will face the Indian/Pakistani team in the quarterfinal.
