Australia’s number one player Bernard Tomic was smashed off the court by Croatian Marin Cilic in the second round at the US Open today.

The No. 27th seed Cilic only lost three games to the Aussie winning 6-1 6-0 6-2. In today’s match the first set was over in 21 minutes and the match lasted a total of one hour and 19 minutes. The Croat hit 34 winners and 8 aces.

Bernard Tomic left the court for treatment after the first set was finished. He also called the trainer in the second set. The young Aussie looked far from the player we saw at Wimbledon this year when he reached the quarterfinal and lost to Novak Djokovic.

Marin Cilic is now meeting with World No. 3 Roger Federer in the third round. Before the Cilic vs. Tomic match Roger hoped the Australian would be the winner as he has never played Tomic before.

Federer and Cilic played this year at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo and in 2008 at the ATP Masters Series in Paris. Roger Federer won both previous meetings. Federer who is eight years older than Cilic and more experienced should not have too many problems with the Croat in the next round.

Cilic is currently ranked No. 28 on the ATP Tour rankings. He has won five career titles but is yet to win a title this year. The Croat has reached two finals in 2011 in Umag and Marseille. His best Grand Slam result came at Australian Open when he lost in the fourth round to Rafael Nadal in three straight sets.

Roger Federer is looking to win his 225th match at a Grand Slam in the next round. The former World No. 1 is trailing behind Jimmy Connors who is currently holding the record with 233 Grand Slam matches.
