Good friends Robby Ginepri and John Isner faced each other today in the second round at on Louis Armstrong stadium the US Open.
Isner came through in three sets 6-4 6-3 6-4 to move into the third round in the last Grand Slam of the year. “I knew it was going to be tough. I knew going in I’d have to serve my best because he’s such a good returner. That’s what I did. When I had my chances I capitalised. It was a very good match on my part. I was very pleased with how I played,” the winner said.
Robby Ginepri has had problems with his left arm on which he had surgery in September last year. The former World No. 15 is currently ranked 363. His best result this year was runner up at an ATP Tour Challenger in Vancouver (l. James Ward). Compared to his opponents lead up results to the US Open it’s no surprise Isner came through in straight sets today.
The 208 centimetres tall North Carolina native won the titles in Newport (d. Oliver Rochus) and Winston Salem (d. Julien Benneteau). He was the runner up in Atlanta where he lost to good mate Mardy Fish in the final.
Today’s match was pretty one sided, despite Ginepri hitting some great winners past Isner. Isner did face a break point in the opening game of the match. Isner broke in the eighth game of the second set and won the set and took a 2-0 set lead. The third set lasted 33 minutes. Isner hit 20 aces past Ginepri and produced 45 winners.
“You know, I didn’t want to play Robby in the second round. I knew one of us was gonna go home. I would have liked his chances against a lot of players today,” Isner said.
The No 28 seed Isner will face the winner of American Alex Bogomolov Jr and lucky loser Rogerio Dutra da Silva in the third round. Dutra da Silva replaced Swede Robin Soderling, who pulled out due to illness.
