MCHALE FAMILIAR WITH ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM
Christina McHale, who faces No. 25 Maria Kirilenko in the opener of today’s Night Session, may have played just five US Open matches in her young career, but she does have some familiarity with playing at night in Arthur Ashe Stadium. McHale earned a wild card into the 2009 US Open by winning the USTA Girls’
18s title and then became just the second Girls’ 18s champion since 2000 to win a match at the US Open, dispatching Polona Hercog in the first round. That earned McHale a match in Arthur Ashe Stadium during the Night Session against Maria Sharapova, a match she lost, 6-2, 6-1.
McHale, who lives in nearby Englewood Cliffs, N.J., also practices frequently at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with the USTA coaches and Patrick McEnroe, General Manager of the USTA’s Player Development program.
