Yesterday marked the first time in 2011 that the US Open has wound down after midnight, the result of a long four-setter between Andy Roddick and Michael Russell to start the Night Session. (Roddick prevailed, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.) As a result, Maria Sharapova and Anastasiya Yakimova started in August and ended in September despite playing a match that lasted just 70 minutes, with Sharapova wrapping up a 6-1, 6-1 victory at 12:09 a.m.

The 10:59 p.m. start was hardly the latest in US Open history, however. A 1987 match between Gabriela Sabatini and Beverly Bowes began at midnight and a match played exactly a year ago yesterday between Caroline Wozniacki and Chelsey Gullickson started at 11:51 p.m
