British Number One Andy Murray won his first round at the US Open against Somdev Devvarman of India in three sets 7-6 (5) 6-2 6-3.
The No.4 seed Murray went down 2-4 in the first set but fought back to force Devvarman into a tiebreak, which the Brit ended up winning 7-5. In the two following sets Murray was too strong for the Indian number one player. Murray did lose his serve in the second set but kept breaking back.
“I was a little bit nervous at the start and making some bad decisions. Once I calmed down, felt better the middle of the first set, I started hitting the ball a little better,” Murray said.
The World No. 4 has only played two ATP World Tour Masters Tournaments since he lost to Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of Wimbledon. Montreal was a disaster. Murray lost in the second round to South African Kevin Anderson. The following week in Cincinnati Murray played five matches against some great competition and got his much needed match practice. He won the final against Djokovic who had to pull out due to a sore shoulder.
Devvarman said, “He really takes advantage of the opportunities he gets. Once he got ahead in the second set after a close breaker, I really felt he took complete control of the match.” The Indian number one also added, “He’s come so close so many times in my mind. It’s just a matter of time before he goes out and wins a slam. I don’t know which one it will be, the US Open suits his game quite well.”
Next up for Andy Murray is Robin Hasse of Holland who defeated Rui Machado of Portugal easily 6-0 6-4 6-4.
Hasse defeated Murray in their last meeting in back in 2008 in Rotterdam. Murray knows his next match against Hasse will be a tough one. “He (Hasse) nearly beat Rafa a few year ago at Wimbledon. Got to be ready for that one. He’s a tough player.”
