The 22-year-old American Donald Young took out Slovakian Lukas Lacko in three sets 6-4 6-2 6-4 today.
Young played second match on Court No. 17 today. He said in his press conference he went out last night to check the court out. Young also said he really liked the feel of the court and that the court didn’t really feel like he was playing in a Grand Slam more like a Masters Series tournament. Donald Young is the first American to win a match in the main draw on the new stadium court.
Today’s win against Lukas Lacko was a fairly comfortable one. Lacko hit a big 56 unforced errors in the three set match. Young had 17 break points and ended up converting six of them.
Donald Young has been the American young and upcoming player for years. In the last couple of years Young has started to play more aggressive and he has matured. “I think everyone’s light turns on at their own time. I’m starting to feel like mine is turning on, not everybody does it when everybody expects it to be done. I wish it could have been earlier,” Young said. Talking about goals the American added, “I really wanted to be top 50 by the end of this summer. Still have the Open to go but definitely that’s a goal I want to hit for sure. If I could make 20 or any higher would be great, but right now it’s top 50.”
Swiss David Cup player Stanislas Wawrinka is waiting for Young in the second round. The American has never played Wawrinka before. The No. 14 seed overcame Maximo Gonzales of Argentina 3-6 6-4 6-1 6-3. Last year Stan reached the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows.
Young is currently ranked No. 84 on the ATP Tour rankings.
