Montréal, August 30, 2011 – Two Canadians were in action today at the US Open, as Frank Dancevic
(Niagara Falls, ON) and Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) took to the courts for their first round matches.
Marino, Canada’s top player, was up first at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre against the
skilled Gisela Dulko of Argentina. Currently 57th in the world, Dulko was ranked as high as 26th in 2005.
Ranked 41st, the Canadian was out to repeat her last run at the US Open when she got passed the first round,
falling to Venus Williams in a heated second round match. But after losing today in two sets of 6-3, 6-3 –her first
defeat in the first round of a Grand Slam in five appearances– the 20-year-old Canadian won’t be reliving her
2010 exploit. Next up for Dulko is Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
As the afternoon matches got underway in New York, Frank Dancevic went head-to-head against Marsel Ilhan
of Turkey. The Canadian earned a spot in the main draw with three victories in the qualifying rounds, including a
win over Arnaud Clément of France, but it seems that fatigue got the best of him. Clearly not at the top of his
game, Dancevic lost the two first sets 6-3, 6-2 and had to retire in the third due to a hamstring injury.
Only one Canadian remains in the singles draw. Tomorrow Vasek Pospisil will face Lukas Rosol of the Czech
Republic in their first round match.
