Australia’s number one player Bernard Tomic had a straight set win over American qualifier Michael Yani 6-3 6-4 6-4 today at the US Open.
The 18-year-old Aussie came onto our radars when he reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon where he lost to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Tomic had to qualify to earn a spot in the main draw. On the way to the quarterfinal he beat Davydenko, Andreev, Soderling and Malisse.
In the press conference Tomic said the match was not as easy as the scoreboard might suggest. “He’s a difficult player, he beat me twice already. I’m happy the way I played today and got through.” He was also asked if he needed to improve on something before his next match and the answer was the return.
Tomic has played the two lead up ATP World Tour Masters tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati. In Montreal he lost in the second round to Tsonga and in Cincinnati he lost first round in qualifying to Frenchman Julien Benneteau, Last week at the Winston Salem Open Tomic lost in the first round to Igor Andreev of Russia.
The World No. 60’s second round match will be against World No. 28 Marin Cilic of Croatia. Cilic took out American Ryan Harrison 6-2 7-5 7-6 (6).
Cilic and Tomic played at last year’s Australian Open and Cilic overcame Tomic in five tough sets. “I have a tough player next match. We had a tough match in Australia and I think it’s going to be a big battle when we play on Wednesday/Thursday. So I have to prepare as much as I can this time to beat him and have revenge on him,” Tomic said.
If Tomic can get past Cilic in the next round there will be a possible match up with the Mighty Roger Federer. Tomic admitted he had seen Roger’s name in his section of the draw.
