Maria Sharapova had to fight hard to overcome Britain’s Heather Watson in her first round at the US Open today.
The number three seed, who won the US Open in 2006 came through in three sets 3-6 7-5 6-3. The 19-year-old Watson is playing her first US Open. The British teenager broke Sharapova’s serve in the second game of the first set and followed through with a 6-3 set win.
In the second set Sharapova was 4-1 up when Watson came back and levelled at 4-4. Sharapova broke serve at 6-5 and took the second set 7-5. In the third set the Russian showed she is the more experienced player using her powerful groundstrokes to take Watson down in the third 6-3. The Russian hit 41 winners compared to Watson’s 9.
Sharapova said of today’s two hours and 34 minutes on court, “I made too may errors early on. She played smart. In the end is where it counts. I hung in there and all I can do is improve in the next round.”
The Former World No. 1 was the runner up at Wimbledon this year. Sharapova has been battling many injuries but now it seems like she is coming back stronger than ever.
The former US Open Champion will face Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus, who defeated Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand 6-0 4-6 6-3.
