Day 1 of the US Open hasn’t had too many surprises. The biggest surprise so far has been the upset of (5) Petra Kvitova by 49th ranked Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru. On paper, this should have been an easy win for Kvitova just based on rankings but she has not had the strongest Summer since winning at Wimbledon. In Toronto, she lost to Andrea Petkovic in the round of 16 1-6 2-6 and then went to Concy where she lost in the round of 16 to Petkovic in straight sets again.

Even with Kvitova’s lack of success on the Summer hard courts she still had more court time under her belt than Dulgheru who has not played since her 2nd round loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova at Wimbledon due to injury. When it came down to the end and Dulgheru was serving for the match, she just had more confidence and composure than Kvitova. Dulgheru will now face fellow Romanian Monica Niculescu in the 2nd round.

In other matches, Ryan Harrison showed that he still has a lot of maturing to do in his straight sets loss to (27) Marin Cilic. In the 2nd game of the first set, Harrison had already lost two of the three challenges allotted to a player in a set and from then on he just became more frustrated and more irritated. Harrison had a chance in the 2nd set but just didn’t capitalize and, in the end, Cilic’s maturity and experience in the big points won out 6-2 7-5 7-6(6). Cilic will face young Australian Bernard Tomin in the 2nd round. Tomic defeated American Qualifier Michael Yani 6-3 6-4 6-4.

Xavier Malisse lost to (31) Marcel Granollers in straight sets 4-6 4-6 4-6.

Other players through in the day session so far include (9) Tomas Berdych, (13) Richard Gasquet, Flavio Cipolla, Madison Keys, (8) Mardy Fish, Laura Robson, (19) Julia Goerges, (20) Janko Tipsarevic, Laura Pous-Tio, Ivo Karlovic, Juan Monaco, Fabio Fognini, Mikhail Kukushkin, Petzschner, (22) Dolgopolov, (27) Lucie Safarova

There are still plenty of matches going on around the grounds. Stay tuned here to 10sballs.com…
