Americans Andy Roddick and John Isner will clash in the semi-finals of the Winston Salem Open tomorrow.
Former US Open Champion Roddick overcame Argentinian Juan Monaco 6-1 6-4 in 66 minutes in the quarterfinals today. The only title win this year came for Roddick in Memphis, TN in February. He holds 29 career singles titles and one Grand Slam title at the 2003 US Open.
Roddick and the 6’9” tall Isner played against each other at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Indian Wells earlier this year. Roddick won in two straight sets. Roddick leads Isner 3 wins to 1. Isner’s only win against Roddick was in the third round at the 2009 US Open when he won in a very tight five sets match.
John Isner is ranked seven spots below Roddick on the ATP Tour singles ranking. The World No. 28 won today in a three sets against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 1-6 6-3 6-4. Isner and Bagdathis played each other recently in the first round in Montreal, Isner downed the Cypriot in two sets. Isner won the Newport tournament in July defeating Belgian Oliver Rochus in the final. He reached the Atlanta final where he lost to Mardy Fish, and he lost in the semi-final to Gael Monfils in Washington. Last week in Cincinnati the big serving Florida resident lost to Radek Stepanek in the first round.
“It was the second time I’ve played him this summer and I’ve had good success. For sure I don’t give any players rhythm because on my serve I’m keeping the points short. I think a lot of the guys like rhythm and Marcos is one of the guys. When he gets into the groove form the baseline, that’s when he plays well and has good results,” Isner said.
Israeli team Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram are continuing their doubles success at the Winston Salem Open. Erlich and Ram beat Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares of Brazil 7-5 6-4 to advance into the semi-final. The duo will now face Colin Fleming of Great Britain and American Scott Lipsky, they will battle it out for a spot in this week’s final.
Lipsky and Flemming took out the second seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the first round. In the top half of the draw Santiago Gonzales of Mexico and Jamie Murray of Great Britain will play Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya for a place in the final.
