Australia’s No. 1 ranked male Bernard Tomic tried his luck in the qualifying of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Cincinnati. Tomic was seeded number eleven in the qualies draw but he lost in the first round to France’s Julien Benneteau in a tough three sets match 7-6 6-7 6-1.
Colin Ebelthite and Adam Feeney went to Cordenons in Italy for the Zucchetti Kos Tennis Cup. The tournament is a €85 000 plus hospitality event.
Ebelthite and Feeney reached the final of the doubles and lost to the top seeds and more experienced Julian Knowle of Austria and Michael Kohlmann of Germany 2-6 7-5 10-5.
The Aussie duo also knocked out the number three seeds Johan Brunstrom and Andreas Siljestrom from Sweden in the semi-finals.
This week some of the Australian women were in Cincinnati for the Western and Southern Open. Jarmila Gajdosova lost in the first round to the number nine seed Andrea Petkovic in three sets 5-7 7-6 (5) 6-2.
The number ten seed Sam Stosur reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati where she lost to the number four seed Maria Sharapova of Russia 6-3 6-2. Sammy got a walk over from Serena Williams in the second round but she had a great win over China’s Li Na in the third round 6-4 3-6 6-4.
Anastasia Rodionova qualified and won a round in Ohio before she lost to Maria Sharapova in the second round 6-1 6-3.
It’s nice to see Western Australian Casey Dellacqua back in the main draw of the bigger tournaments. Casey teamed up with Russian Alla Kudryavseva and the two won a round before losing to the top seeds Kveta Peschke and Katraina Srebotnik in the second round 6-2 6-3.
There are some other good news for Casey Dellacqua, who has been awarded a wildcard into the main draw at the US Open starting next week. Casey has been injured but has enjoyed some success since her comeback.
“I am very grateful for this ooportunity and I am looking forward to playing at the US Open for the first time since 2008. I’m looking forward to the challenge and can’t wait to take on the world’s best once again,” Dellacqua said.
Aussie Junior Wimbledon Champion Ashleigh Barty has received a wildcard into the qualifying event at the US Open. Todd Woodbridge Tennis Australia’s Professional Tennis Manager said, “Ashleigh’s win at the Junior Championships at Wimbledon was a great pay off for all the hard work she’s put in and I’m thrilled the USTA has granted her a wildcard into the women’s qualifying event.”
Former Wimbledon Champion and World Number One Lleyton Hewitt has been granted a wildcard because of the reciprocal agreement Tennis Australia have with the USTA.
