World No. 5 ranked Indian doubles team Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi caused a bit of an upset today when they took out the World No. 1 team of Bob and Mike Bryan at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
The Indian duo lost the first set 6-1 in just over 20 minutes, they were also a break down early in the second set before the match turned around. The Indians won the second set in a tiebreak only losing two points. The match tiebreak ended 10-7 to the Indian’s advantage.
Bhupathi and Paes have won two tournaments this year. They won the Chennai Open on home soil in January and the ATP World Tour Masters in Miami. They were runners up at the Australian Open in January.
Opponents in the final tomorrow will be France’s Michael Llodra and Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic, who defeated Juan Sebastian Cabal and Florian Mayer 4-6 6-3 10-4. Llodra/Zimonjic won the title in Montréal last week and were the Champions in Washington the week before.
The French/Serbian team are ranked number three on the ATP Doubles Team Ranking. Ahead are the Bryans at number one and Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor in the second place.
Tomorrow’s winners will share $153 600 and receive 1000 ranking points. The runners up will divide $75 200 and receive 600 ranking points.
