Tennis supreme Roger Federer won his second round at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati against Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3 7-5.

Federer had the right to fear the Argentinian today, who has won their last two meetings. The two last played each other in 2009 at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The World No. 3 broke serve once in each set and that was enough to see off his opponent today. Del Potro has had some time off the tour due to an injury but he is back playing well again. Amongst his best results this year is the win in Delray Beach, a semi-final in Indian Wells, and a win in Estoril in April.

Roger Federer had a bit of a disaster last week when losing in the third round to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Fed’s next opponent will be American wildcard James Blake, who defeated Fabio Fognini 6-4 6-2. Blake had a great first round win over Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in three sets.

Unfortunately, 10sballs.com’s favourite player Xavier Malisse lost to big serving South African Kevin Anderson 6-3 7-6 (6). Anderson will face the number twelve seed Richard Gasquet of France in the second round.

World No. 2 Rafael Nadal and his partner Marc Lopez advanced into the second round of the doubles event today. They defeated the Serbian team of Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki 7-6 (4) 6-7 (2) 10-5. The Spanish team can expect a tough match next against Indian super team Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Another team through to the second round is Juan Sebastian Cabal of Colombia and Florian Mayer of Germany. They took out Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny 7-5 7-6 (7). Waiting in the next round are the number eight seeds Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner.
