Novak Djokovic can’t put a foot wrong right now. Earlier today he won his fifth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event this season at the Rogers Cup in Montréal.
The World No. 1 has won Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome and now Montréal. Djokovic defeated American Mardy Fish in the final 6-2 3-6 6-4. The American had some chances having had five break points in the first set.
Fish had the chance to take home a title today at the Rogers Cup. He is yet to win an ATP World Tour Master 1000 tournament. Mardy has reached three Masters finals in his career, Cincinnatti ‘03 and ’10 and in Indian Wells in 2008.
Fish has got six career titles and he was the Silver Medalist at the Athens Olympics. “I felt like I had an opportunity today, I really did. I had a lot of chances in that first set, ended up losing 6-2 early. If you try to forget who you’re playing against, you’re just playing another player, maybe you can figure out a way to get a break or two there. I had a lot of shots early in that first set on my racquet that I’d like to have back,” Mardy Fish said after the match.
Djokovic has now got a 53 – 1 win/loss record this season. His only loss was against Roger Federer at the French Open semi-finals. The 24-year-old Serb took home $450 000 in prize money and he earned 1000 ATP Ranking Points. Mardy earned 600 ranking points and $224 000 in prize money.
In today’s doubles finals the No. 4 seeds Michael Llodra of France and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia won their second title in two weeks. Llodra/Zimonjic took out super duo Bob and Mike Bryan 6-4 6-7 (5) 10-5.
The French/Serbian team won their first team title at the Legg mason Tennis Classic in Washington last week.
Bob and Mike were looking to win their fourth title in Canada this week. They have already been in nine tour level finals this year. The brothers have won two Grand Slams this season, Australian Open and Wimbledon.
But today it wasn’t enough to beat their opponents. Zimonjic said, “Today I thought we played really well tactically. We played really well as a team, which is very important against such a team like the Bryans.”
