Swiss No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka defeated American qualifier Michael Russell 6-3 6-2 to advance in to the third round at the Rogers Cup in Montréal.

Wawrinka will play South African Kevin Anderson, who had a surprise win over Andy Murray on Tuesday 6-3 6-1. The number fourteen seed said of his next opponent, “My opponent tomorrow is dangerous because of the level he’s been playing. He can beat any player and he proved it yesterday. I have to play a big match if I want to win.”

World No. 9 Tomas Berdych fought hard to win over Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov in three sets 4-6 6-2 6-3. Next up for Berdych is big serving Croat Ivo Karlovic, who took out German qualifier Philipp Petzschner in three tiebreak sets.

American John Isner had a two set win over Marcos Baghdatis in the first round. The rain interrupted match finished 6-3 6-4 in Isner’s favour. The American will face Viktor Troicki in the second round.

Fernando Verdasco had a tough three sets win over Germany’s Tobias Kamke 5-7 6-3 6-3. Verdasco is more than likely to set up a clash with good friend Rafael Nadal in the third round.

The number five seeds Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi overcame Paul Hanley of Australia and Bruno Soares of Brazil 6-4 7-6 (6) to advance into the third round of the doubles. The Indian/Pakistani team will play the winners of Bob and Mike Bryan and Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.

Andy and Jamie Murray had a first round win over Canadian wildcards Erik Chvojka and Pierre-Ludovic Duclos 6-2 2-6 10-7. The Murray Brothers will now face Erik Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer who are seeded number eight.
