Indian doubles combination Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi suffered an early loss to Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic and Germany’s Florian Mayer in the first round of Coupe Rogers in Montréal today.
The number three seeds Bhupathi and Paes was taken out in two sets 6-1 7-6 (9). Berdych and Mayer are through to the quarterfinals of the doubles event where their opponents are yet to be decided.
Paul Hanley of Australia and Bruno Soares of Brazil booked a place in the second round today after being too good for Nicolas Almgaro of Spain and Lukas Dlouhy of Czech Republic. Hanly and Soares stormed through with a 6-3 6-2 win.
Paul Hanley has slipped in the doubles rankings to No. 38 after being the World No. 5. Hanley had a great Australian summer winning both the Brisbane and the Sydney tournaments with Lukas Dlouhy.
“Handles” and Soares will face this year’s Halle Champions Aisam-Ul-Haq of Pakistan and Rohan Bopanna of India next.
The singles guys are having success this week in the doubles. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Stanislas Wawrinka are through to the second round defeating Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov and Belgian Dick Norman 6-2 6-4.
Tsonga and Wawrinka take on Swedish Open Champions Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Horia Tecau of Romania, who are seeded number six in Montréal.
