WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AUGUST 8, 2011) – Ever dreamed of going up against Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, John Isner or the other pros in the upcoming Winston-Salem Open? Now, you have a chance. The Winston-Salem Open is dedicating two wildcard slots, one for boys and one for men, to the qualifier taking place Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21 to a local tennis player. All other participants in the August 20-21 Qualifier are professional tennis players on the ATP World Tour.

The local players will be selected in a competition at the Joe White Tennis Center at Hanes Park (625 West End Boulevard) to be held August 16-19. The local “Wildcard into Winston-Salem Open Qualifying Tournament” is under the direction of Randy Pate with the Randy Pate Tennis Academy.

The Hanes Park competition is open to both juniors and adults. Registration is $75. Those interested in competing for the wildcard slots must register in advance online by Friday, August 12, 2011 11:59 p.m. Online registration also is available at www.winstonsalemopen.com.

“Winston-Salem has a lot of tennis history and a lot of tennis talent, so we decided it would be appropriate to give a local person the chance to go up against one of the pros at the Winston-Salem Open,” tournament director Bill Oakes said. “Hanes Park itself is a great tennis facility, and many tournaments have been held there over the years. This competition should be a fun experience for both competitors and fans alike. Who knows? Maybe we’ll find the next pro at Hanes Park.”
