Chela Advances – Giraldo upsets Fognini in Kitzbuhel
Top seed Juan Ignacio Chela battled through his first round match against Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver winning 6-4 3-6 6-3 at the Bet-At-Home Cup in Kitzbuhel.
Former world number 15 Chela is looking to win his 7th single career title this week. The Argentinian is still without a title this year. He won Bucharest and Houston in 2010. Chela reached the Kitzhuhel final in 2006. He will play the winner of Croatian qualifier Antonio Veic and in-form Spaniard Marcel Granollers.
Santiago Giraldo of Colombia took out the number four seed Fabio Fognini in the second round 6-3 6-4. The match lasted one hour and 25 minutes. Giraldo is currently ranked number 62 on the ATP Tour Rankings. He reached a career highest ranking of 44 in February this year.
The Colombian is yet to win an ATP World Tour title. His best result came at the Santiago tournament where he reached the final and lost to Tommy Robredo in three sets.
World No. 48 Andreas Seppi won his second round against Pere Riba of Spain 7-5 6-4. Seppi is the number six seed this week in Kitzbuhel. The Italian won the Eastbourne tournament this year on grass and he was the runner up in Gstaad in 2007. Seppi’s next opponent will be the winner of Robin Hasse and second seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain.
Top seeds Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek suffered a surprise loss to Victor Hanescu of Romania and Frank Moser of Germany. Hanescu and Moser won easily in two sets 6-2 6-3 in the first round at the Bet-At-Home Cup.
The number four seeds Daniele Bracciali and Santiago Gonzales advanced to the semi-finals after beating James Cerretani and Philipp Marx 6-4 4-6 10-8.
Franco Ferreiro and Andre Sa of Brazil are also through to the semi-finals after a two sets win over Lukas Rosol and Rogier Wassen 7-6 (5) 6-3.
