Granollers Good Form Continues In Kitzbuhel

Spain’s Marcel Granollers is continuing his great form during the European clay court season. Yesterday, he blitzed past Italian Filippo Volandri of Italiy with a 6-4 6-2 win at the Bet-At-Home Cup in Kitzbuhel.

Graollers won the Credit Agricole Suisse Open in Gstaad last week beating Verdasco in the final and en route he took out Mikhail Youzhny and the second seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The 25-year-old Spaniard is now ranked a career high of 33 on the ATP Tour Rankings.

The Gstaad Champion sets up a clash with Croatian qualifier Antonio Veic who overcame in form Austrian Andreas Haider–Maurer 6-7 (3) 6-4 6-2. Veic’s best career performance was at last year’s French Open when he reached the third round before losing to Rafael Nadal.

The number four seed Fabio Fognini of Italy will play Santiago Giraldo of Colombia who made short work of German qualifier Daniel Brands on Monday. Giraldo won his first round 6-3 6-3 in 68 minutes.

Joao Souza of Brazil won the battle of the qualifiers in three sets. Souza played Polish qualifier Jerzy Janowicz in the first round and won 6-3 4-6 7-6 (3).

The number three seeds in the doubles event Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain tumbled out to Franco Ferreiro and Andre Sa of Brazil in the first round in Kitzbuhel 6-4 5-7 10-8. The Brazilian team will now face Lukas Rosol and Rogier Wassen in the second round. Rosol and Wassen sailed past Potito Starace and Filippo Volandri 6-2 6-3.

Last weeks Gstaad finalists Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya won in straight sets against Spanish team David Marrero and Ruben Rmirez Hidalgo 6-3 7-5. Kas and Peya will play the winner of Austrian wildcard team Andreas Haider-Maurer and Thomas Muster and Igor Andreev and Daniel Gimeno Traver.
