World No. 45 Marcel Granollers of Spain captured his second ATP World Tour title at the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad on Sunday.
The 25 year-old Spaniard defeated Fernando Verdasco in the final in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-3. This win earned Granollers €72 600 and 250 ATP Tour Ranking points.
Granollers had a great week in Gstaad beating the number two seed Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round and the number three seed Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the semi-final.
“Last week was bad for me because I felt a lot of pain in my arm, which I felt since Wimbledon. I went home and rested for a few days without any practice and I came here on Sunday and started to feel better and better. Now I have won the tournament and so it’s amazing,” The Gstaad Champion said.
Marcel Granollers is the seventh different Spanish player to win a title this year on the ATP Tour. Sunday’s final was the fifth all-Spanish final this year on the Tour. 1997 was the last time there was an all-Spanish final at the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open.
The Champion won the first set without too many problems. Verdasco fought back in the second set and broke early. Granollers broke in the sixth game in the deciding set and then it was smooth sailing all the way to the end for Granollers.
Verdasco said, “It was close, and when a match is like that, one or two points decide it. He played better than me on the important points and he served very good. He really deserves this victory after having the pain in his arm the past few weeks and he didn’t even know if he would be able to play here. He played unbelievable all wee, beat many good players and today it was really tough just to return his serve.”
This was Granollers second career win on the ATP World Tour. In 2008 he won Houston after beating James Blake in the final. Fernando Verdasco is yet to win a title this year. His last title was in April 2010 when he beat Robin Soderling in Barcelona.
Top seeds Franitsek Cermak and Filip Polasek took home the doubles trophy this week. Cermak and Polasek beat Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya in the final 6-3 7-6 (7). This is Cermak and Polasek’s second ATP World Tour team title. They won the Serbia Open in Belgrade this year defeating Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya.
