Australia’s third ranked player Matthew Ebden teamed up with Alex Bogomolov Jr. this week at the Atlanta Tennis Championships.
The Bogomolov/Ebden combination took out their maiden team title beating Matthias Bachinger and Frank Moser in the final 3-6 7-5 10-8. The final was over in one hour and 34 minutes.
Western Australian Matthew Ebden has had a good run on the doubles circuit this year. The Atlanta title is his second in three weeks. He won his first title together with American Ryan Harrison at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport.
South African born Ebden is currently ranked 139 in singles and 121 in doubles.
Victorian Marinko Matosevic qualified at the Atlanta Tennis Championships this week. Matosevic took out number six seed Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in the first round of the main draw 6-7 (3) 6-2 7-5. The World No. 169 lost in the second round to Yen-Hsun Lu in three sets 3-6 6-1 6-2.
Wimbledon Champion Lleyton Hewitt was also in Atlanta last week. Hewitt drew American qualifier Phillip Simmonds in the first round. The Australian won in two straight sets 6-4 6-4.
Lleyton lost in the second round to American wildcard and doubles player Rajeev Ram 7-5 2-6 6-2.
The South Australian born player is currently ranked 174 on the ATP Tour ranking. He held the World Number One ranking for the first time in 2001.
The all-Australian doubles team of Stephen Huss and Ashley Fisher lost to the Atlanta Champions Bogomolv Jr. and fellow Aussie Matthew Ebden in the first round.
Anastasia Rodionova will take on former world number one Serena Williams in the first round at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. Williams and Rodionova has previously played twice and the Aussie has never taken a set of Williams so far.
Samantha Stosur will commence the Bank of the West Classic tournament in round two because of a bye due to her number four seeding in Stanford.
Stosur tweeted a couple of days ago how excited she was travelling to the US on Qantas’ new Airbus A380.
Sammy will play play the winner of Romanian Simona Halep or Sabine Lisicki.
Battler Peter Luczak played a challenger this week in Poland, The Poznan Porsche Open. “Looch” lost in the second round to the number five seed Stephane Robert of France 6-2 6-3.
World number 217 Chris Guccione competed at the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships in Lexington, KY. “The Gooch” Lost in the second round to Jamie Baker of Great Britian 7-5 7-6 (4).
Another Aussie playing in Lexington, KY was Carsten Ball. The number five seed lost in the second round to American qualifier Blake Strode in three sets 7-5 4-6 6-4.
Australia managed to win the doubles event through Jordan Kerr and his partner David Martin from the USA. Kerr and Martin didn’t lose a set throughout the tournament. The Aussie/American team defeated James Ward and Michael Yani in the final 6-3 6-4.
