Farmers Tennis Classic Update - The Draws Are Out!

If you can get out to see it, there are some great matches today at the Farmer’s Tennis Classic qualifying.  Lots of local talent as well as some great players from around the world.

I guess that was Nicolas Massu that I saw hitting with Fernando Gonzales because he plays the fourth match after 10 on court 2.

If you like tall, check out these two Australians: Chris Guccione at 6′ 7″, second on court 1 against American Dennis Kudla.  Last year Dennis was the losing half of an all American final in the US Open Juniors.  Aussie Carsten Ball at 6′ 6″ is born and raised in Newport Beach and still calls it home, but he plays international events for Australia.  He’s third on court 1.

The current #1 US Junior, Thousand Oaks’s own Marcos Giron, plays first on court 2 against New Zealander, Artem Sitak.

Other local talent includes

Cecil Mamitt, playing for the Phillipines, but born and raised right here in LA (in fact, he learned to play on my courts at Griffith Park).  Cecil is the elder statesmen here, having won the NCAA’s his freshman year at USC in 1996.  Cecil is on at 10 on court 1 against Tim Smyzek.

Current UCLA standouts Daniel Kosakowski (first on court 5) and Clay Thompson(fourth on court 1) were both SoCal junior standouts.   Veteran UCLA alum Zach Fleishman plays first on court 4 at 10:00.

Irvine’s Michael McClune(fourteen on court 5) is coming up on the four year anniversary of winning Kalamazoo National 18’s with victories over Steve Johnson (current NCAA champ and in the main draw here with a wild card), Ryan Harrison (today’s semifinalist in the ATP event in Atlanta) and Stanford leader, Ryan Thatcher. Also from Stanford is last year’s NCAA champ, Bradley Klahn.  And wild card Alex Kim may be 1999 Stanford NCAA champ (but that would be strange; he’s inactive on the ATP computer).

Here’s the full order of play at the Sycamore courts.  Remember, parking area 15; but if you want to see the main draw players practicing, parking structure 7!  Either way, no admission fee beyond parking.

I’ll have some more comments for you about the main draw for you tomorrow.  Looks exciting.  Or maybe just like “Groundhod Day” if you are Devvarman or Sweeting.
