Juan Carlos Ferrero won the MercedesCup title and a Mercedez SLK 350 on Sunday after coming back from an injury break. This week at the bet-at-home Open – German Tennis Championships 2011 Ferrero lost to in the opening round to German wildcard Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in two straight sets 6-3 6-2.
German Philipp Kohlschreiber ousted the defending champion Andrey Golubev 7-5 6-3. Kohlschreiber is ranked No. 43 in the world and he said after the match, “For sure I’m really happy. It was a tough match I think he started a little bit better than me and had better opportunities to win the first set, but after he didn’t convert his break points.” The German’s next opponent is No. 16 seed Spaniard Albert Montanes, who due to his seeding had a bye in the first round.
It took 63 minutes for Gilles Simon of France to beat Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2 6-1. No. 5 seed Simon will now face Finish star Jarkko Nieminen who had a great win against the No. 10 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine in three sets 6-3 1-6 6-4.
Argentinian Juan Monaco took out Italian qualifier Simone Bolelli 6-3 7-5. Monaco will play No.9 seed Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.
Radek Stepanek beat German wildcard Andreas Beck in one hour and 55 minutes 7-5 7-6 (2). Stepanek is facing Italian Andreas Seppi in the second round.
Both top seeded teams in the doubles event at the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg are out of the competition. Top seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland lost to Serigiy Stakhovsky and Radek Stepanek 6-4 6-3
The Wimbledon Champions 2010 Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner lost to Lukas Dlouhy and Michal Mertinak 2-6 6-4 10-5.
