- Medina Garrigues, who turns 29 on July 31, wins her fifth singles title in Palermo and 10th clay court title overall; with the win, the Spaniard passes Venus Williams for most WTA clay court titles among active players (Williams has nine).
– Medina Garrigues, who won at Estoril earlier this year, also has one hardcourt title (2006 Canberra). She improves to 11-6 in career singles finals.
– This level of domination of a single WTA event has only been achieved by three other active players, namely Venus Williams (at Wimbledon), Serena Williams (at the Australian Open and Miami) and Kim Clijsters (at Luxembourg). Medina Garrigues is 32-3 lifetime in Palermo, winning in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 and now 2011.
– Hercog was on a nine-match winning streak, winning her first WTA title last week in Bastad and making the finals for the second straight week in Palermo. The 20-year-old is now 1-2 in WTA finals, finishing runner-up in Acapulco last year to Venus.
– Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci win their third doubles title of the season, following earlier victories at Hobart and Pattaya City. Both players now own eight WTA doubles titles, five won together.
