Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (ESP) große Siegerin beim Nürnberger Gastein Ladies 2011

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (ESP) –  Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT) 6:0 / 7:5

Final Facts

– Martínez Sánchez wins her fourth career title – and first in 14 months. Now 28, the Spanish lefty won on red clay at Bogotá and Bastad in 2009 and Rome in 2010. She moves to 4-1 in finals, having been runner-up at Barcelona in 2008.

– After winning at Rome, Martínez Sánchez was sidelined for two months last summer due to a knee injury; after not defending her Rome points this year she fell down the rankings into the 80s. However, she beat Top 20 players at the French Open and Wimbledon, and reached the quarterfinals in Bastad last week. After her title run at Bad Gastein she is projected to return to the Top 40.

– Mayr-Achleitner enjoyed the best week of her career in Bad Gastein, reaching her first WTA final, and on home soil. Along the way the Austrian wildcard ousted No.5 seed Lourdes Domínguez Lino; then, in the semis, she beat No.8 seed Ksenia Pervak (the only seed to survive the first round) by a 60 60 scoreline.

– Eva Birnerova and Lucie Hradecka win their first WTA title together on their second outing as a team at tour level; previously the Czechs had won both ITF Circuit titles entered together.

– Birnerova now owns two WTA doubles titles (she also won 2006 Stockholm w/Gajdosova) while Hradecka has 11, including the 2011 French Open (w/Hlavackova).

– Hradecka is undefeated in doubles at Bad Gastein; she has won the title every year since the tournament’s inception (2007 w/Voracova; 2008 and 2009 w/Hlavackova; 2010 w/Medina Garrigues).

Final Quotes

María José Martínez Sánchez, 2011 NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies singles champion:

“At the start I was playing almost 100% perfectly. It’s normal to have a bit of difficulty after such a good start, but I stayed calm all the time until the end, and that’s why I won. It’s a really good step for me to play a lot of matches in the same week and build my confidence. I didn’t have too many days to get used to the altitude here, but day by day I was learning. Next is Toronto, Canada. I won’t be able to do a lot of drop shots on hardcourts, but I’ll be serving and volleying.”

Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, 2011 NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies singles runner-up:

“I couldn’t find my game today, and she was playing very well. I think it was too windy for me. Even when I was winning the second set I didn’t feel it was my game, and I couldn’t find my forehand today. I was a little angry. But she played very well – she started really well – and it was still a fantastic week for me. It was also nice to get all the support I did this week.”

Lucie Hradecka, 2011 NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies doubles champion:

“It’s really amazing to win a fifth title here – I really like this tournament and I’m so happy to win it with Eva. The final was really tough but at the end I just concentrated on one point at a time. We had 9-6 in the match tie-break but then they had match point; I think winning a big tournament like Roland Garros gave me great experience and for sure I can use that on court.”

Eva Birnerova, 2011 NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies doubles champion:

“I like it here a lot, because the organizers make it very ‘familiar’. I’m very glad we won because it was a lot of pressure for me… I knew that for Lucie only a title win would be any good! So I’m very happy that we did it. It was a great week.”
