21-year-old Kvitova breaks through in singles, Peschke and Srebotnik take home doubles
The Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova made a major breakthrough on the lawns of the All- England Club this year, not just becoming the youngest player in more than three years to win a Grand Slam title, but also the first left-hander to win one in 15 and a half years. Her power game hitting its mark all fortnight long, she took out Maria Sharapova in the title match, 63 64, and inches up from No.8 to No.7 this week.
Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik won their first Grand Slam women’s doubles title – together and individually – and subsequently have become the co-No.1 doubles players in the world. Following in Kvitova and Peschke’s footsteps, another Czech, Iveta Benesova, won the mixed doubles title with Jürgen Melzer.
