He was the Australian Open Junior Champion in 2008. He has won the prestigious junior tournament Orange Bowl twice. He qualified for Wimbledon this year and on Wednesday he will face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon probably on Centre Court.
His current world ranking is No. 158, his highest ranking ever. After the Championships are over it will be a whole different story. Bernard Tomic has overcome some very distinguished players in the last 10 days. He smashed former world No.3 Nikolay Davydenko winning in three sets. It took the Aussie five sets to overcome Russian Igor Andreev.
The outcome of the match against Swede Robin Soderling was probably the most surprising. Tomic gave the Swede nothing and won in three sets. There were talks about Soderling feeling unwell but a win is a win.
Yesterday on Court 18 the young Aussie played Belgium’s Xavier Malisse. Again he managed a three set win 6-1, 7-5 6-4. Tomic was really happy with all the support he gets from the Australian fans at the Grand Slams.
Bernard was born in Germany. He moved to Australia when he was 3-years-old. He currently resides on the Gold Coast. Tomic is now Australia’s number one player after Lleyton Hewitt’s ranking dropped due to his many injuries. The 18-year old didn’t want to comment about his newly achieved number one ranking. He said, “I have more important things to worry about.”
The more important thing will be how to beat Novak Djokovic on Wednesday.
