We love seeing a Brit in the second week of Wimbledon. Without a top British player in the second week, the tournament would not be the same. We are very happy Murray came and took over after Tim Henman retired.
Over 8 million people tuned in to watch Andy Murray’s match against Ivan Ljubicic on Friday night. They want to see Murray winning the title on Sunday. It’s been 75 years since Fred Perry won at Wimbledon.
Next up is No. 17 seed Richard Gasquet of France. His fourth round opponent is not to be taken lightly. Murray and Gasquet had an epic battle back in 2008 when Andy came from two sets down to beat him in five.
Gasquet’s highest ranking in singles is No. 7. In 2007, Gasquet reached his first Grand Slam semi final where he lost to Roger Federer. The Frenchman has got one of the best backhands in the game.
It would be interesting to know how many words have been written about Murray in the last couple of weeks. The story about his mother Judy fancying the handsome Feliciano Lopez made almost every newspaper. Andy decided to embarrass his mother by asking Lopez to take a picture with him. “I said when we were warming up, I shouted across the net, Feli if we sit down for a drink, if you could take a picture with my mom because she thinks you’re beautiful.” Apparently, Mrs Murray went bright red in the face.
Andy’s brother Jamie credited his more famous brother for helping him to get his doubles career back on track again and occasionally Andy plays doubles with Jamie. In 2007, Jamie won the Mixed Doubles event at Wimbledon with Jelena Jankovic.
Good luck Andy for next week – Can’t wait to see you lifting the mighty Wimbledon trophy.
The Murray – Gasquet showdown will take place on Centre Court on Monday at 13.00.
