British teenager Laura Robson was overpowered by Maria Sharapova yesterday. Robson pushed the Russian to a tiebreaker in the first set and lost the second set 6-3. Sharapova, who won Wimbledon seven years ago will now face Klara Zakopalova of Czech Republic.
Another Brit Elena Baltacha lost to China’s Peng Shaui, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Andy Murray had every reason to be a bit worried yesterday facing Croat Ivan Ljubicic, a former world No.3. The crowd was at full capacity of 15 000. They saw Andy coming through 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6. Up next for Murray is Richard Gasquet of France, who outclassed Simone Bolelli of Italy, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark made short work of Virginie Razzano of France. The match lasted an hour and finished 6-1, 6-3.
Fabulous Feliciano Lopez of Spain ousted big hitting American Andy Roddick, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2), 6-4. Lopez who has been given a new nickname “Deliciano”, by Andy Murray’s mother Judy was too strong for Roddick. “I almost didn’t miss anything. I played an almost unbelievable match. Andy was serving great, he hit 24 aces, so to win this in three sets is a great performance,” said Lopez after the match.
Rafael Nadal has yet to finish his match against Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. The super Spaniard took the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (6).
Second seed Vera Zvonareva made a surprise exit yesterday. The Russian, last year’s finalist at Wimbledon and US Open crashed out to Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, 6-2, 6-3.
Marion Bartoli of France saved three match points before seeing off Loudres Domingues Lino, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Bartoli next opponent is No. 21 seed Italian Flavia Pennetta.
