When Lleyton Hewitt walked on to court 12 yesterday, he wasn’t sure if he would be able to last the entire match. After a gutsy performance, Hewitt overcame Japanese player Kei Nishikori, 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (7), 6-3.

Hewitt is far from the player he was when he took out the Wimbledon title in 2002. The tournament organisers must have given the Australian a map to show him where the court was located. But all credit to Lleyton, despite the stabbing pain in his left foot, he finished the match and came out the winner.

Hewitt said after the match, “It was very satisfying, considering what I’ve been through. Mentally and physically what I had to go through to try and even get on the court. He’s a quality player, so it’s very pleasing.” Hewitt will face the super Swedish player Robin Soderling in the next round.

Bernard Tomic, the youngest player in the draw, had a surprise win over former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko, 7-5, 6-3, 7-5. Tomic was very happy with his win but wasn’t happy when they pulled out his name to play Davydenko in the first round. Tomic doesn’t consider his favourite surface to be grass. He said in the press conference, “Looking at it, the way I played probably gave me an extra confidence boost but my favourite surface is hardcourt.” Bernard will play Igor Andreev of Russia next.

Sam Stosur wasn’t having much luck against world No. 262 Melina Czink of Hungary. One hour and seven minutes later, Czink was the winner in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Stosur’s record at Wimbledon is not the best; she has reached the third round once.

Marinko Matosevic went through qualifying last week, having to beat fellow Aussie Chris Guccione in the last round. Matosevic fell to experienced Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2.
