Novak Djokovic outclassed Jeremy Chardy, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round yesterday. The Serb said after the match, “I’m on a winning streak of one! I won seven titles in a row but it was kind of a relief when it ended in Paris. I am mentally fresh again.”
British No. 2 James Ward fell to Frenchman Michael Llodra in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (4),6-3. The Brit had plenty of support out on Court 2. “I still had chances. I still had a lot of break points out there and a lot of chances but he came up with the goods at the right time,” Ward said after the match. With Ward out of the competition, Andy Murray will be the only British man in the second round.
Another Brit, Elena Baltacha, overcame qualifier Mona Barthel, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the second round. Baltacha will now compete against Shuai Peng of China. Elena said she felt so much more relaxed because she felt she has done a lot of work on her mental side.
Anne Keothavong took out fellow British player Naomi Broady, 6-2, 6-4. Next up for Keothavong is Petra Kvitova.
American Andy Roddick had an easy day in the office. Roddick took out Andreas Beck of Germany, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-3. “It’s impossible not to be anxious for the first round of a Slam,” Roddick said.
Emotional Serena Willams had to work hard to overcome Aravane Rezai from France. Williams has had a difficult year, and Wimbledon is only her second tournament after recovering from a foot injury and clots on her lungs. It took Williams three sets to reach the second round. Rezai took the second set, 6-3. The match ended, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Swiss super star Roger Federer cruised past Mikhail Kukushkin from Kazakhstan, 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-2. Roger is looking to win his seventh Wimbledon title this year. “The first rounds here at Wimbledon on Centre Court are never easy. I want to do so well here at Wimbledon because it’s some of the big highlights for me during the season, and I’ve won the tournament six times,” said Federer.
Danish No. 1 seed, Caroline Wozniacki blasted Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain off the court, 6-2, 6-1. Wozniacki spent 59 minutes on court to reach the second round.
