RAONIC REACHES SECOND ROUND AT WIMBLEDON
Montreal, June 20, 2011 – Several Canadians were scheduled to hit the courts on Monday for the first day of main draw action at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam event of the tennis season. As a result of rain at the All-England Club, only Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) was able to complete his first round match.
Despite being the no. 31 seed in the tournament, Raonic made his Wimbledon debut today and he appeared very comfortable on the grass courts in London, England against France’s Marc Gicquel. The 20-year-old hit 41 winners and committed just 13 unforced errors en route to a convincing 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3 victory. Raonic also hit 25 aces which brings his season total to over the 500 mark which is tops on the ATP World Tour. In the second round Raonic will meet Gilles Muller of Luxembourg who ousted German Tommy Haas in the first round.
The rain wreaks havoc at SW19 Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) were also scheduled to play Monday, but rain forced their matches to be moved to Tuesday. Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) will also play his first match tomorrow.
Bester wins a Futures event Philip Bester (Vancouver, BC) was crowned champion of the Chico Futures event in California over the weekend. The win is Bester’s first title of 2011 and fifth of his career. Ranke no. 244 in the world and seeded first in the tournament, Bester defeated American Blake Strode 6-4, 6-2 in the final.

Montréal, le 20 juin 2011 – Plusieurs Canadiens devaient fouler les terrains de Wimbledon en cette première journée du troisième tournoi du Grand Chelem de l’année mais en raison de la pluie, un seul d’entre eux fut en mesure de jouer son match de premier tour, soit Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON).
Même s’il est 31e tête de série, c’est la première fois de sa jeune carrière que Raonic prend part au prestigieux tournoi de Wimbledon. Il a toutefois semblé très à l’aise lors de sa rencontre de première ronde alors qu’il faisait face au Français Marc Gicquel. En effet, l’athlète de 20 ans a été en contrôle du match du début à la fin réussissant un total de 41 coups gagnants contre seulement 13 erreurs directes dans une victoire de 6-3, 7-6 (3) et 6-3. De plus, l’Ontarien a connu beaucoup de succès au service enregistrant 25 as et portant ainsi le compte à plus de 500 as réussis cette année. Cette impressionnante statistique le place d’ailleurs au premier rang de l’ATP World Tour à ce chapitre. Raonic croisera maintenant le fer avec Gilles Muller du Luxembourg qui a pris la mesure de l’Allemand Tommy Haas en levée de rideau.
La pluie fait des siennes Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) et Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) devaient également être en action aujourd’hui mais elles devront patienter jusqu’à demain puisque la température n’a pas été très clémente aujourd’hui. Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) disputera lui aussi sa rencontre de premier tour demain.
Bester remporte un Futures Philip Bester (Vancouver, BC) a remporté les grands honneurs du Futures de Chico en Californie. C’est un
premier titre cette année et un cinquième en carrière pour le joueur présentement classé au 244e rang mondial.
En finale, Bester a eu le dessus sur l’Américain Blake Strode en deux manches de 6-4 et 6-2.
