He probably doesn’t know it himself, but Andy Murray currently sits in eleventh place on the all-time top tennis earners list.
And that is because the Dunblane Dynamo remains focused on simply winning silverware and in particular Grand Slam titles, rather than worrying about the size of the cheques he may receive for being successful.
The Scot goes into Wimbledon 2011 in arguably the best touch of his career as he seeks to win that elusive first major triumph
Murray new upbeat mentality and confidence is likely to further boost his prospects, especially considering that the championship at SW19 this year is arguably the most open it has been since 2003 when the mighty Roger Federer was nailed on to defend his crown.
The World No.4 will once again aim to dethrone Federer and ultimately try to start his own tennis legacy in the same way the Swiss has done throughout the past decade.
“To win a title is what gets you fired up. That is about playing for history” Murray told the Sunday Mirror.
“It’s not that I don’t care about the money. But in the final at Queen’s I had no idea how much the winner’s cheque was compared to the runner-up’s cheque. My only aim was to win the title and win the tournament” he said.
It is quite rare in this day and age to find a sportsperson that is solely driven by success and not financial reward.
Interestingly however, that is exactly what Roger Federer has been renowned for over the course of his sixteen Grand Slam title haul.
Murray may never be able to fully match Federer’s achievements to that degree; nevertheless it is an achievement in itself if Murray can emulate Federer’s attitude and approach consistently throughout his own career.
And if he can, then he will deserve all of the plaudits and accolades that come to him.
