Final Facts
- 26-year-old Bartoli wins her sixth WTA singles title, her first on grass and first of 2011, having been runner-up at Indian Wells and Strasbourg this year. Before today her most recent tournament win was at Stanford in 2009, also at the Premier level. The Frenchwoman is now 6-8 in career finals.
– Bartoli’s match against Stosur earlier in the day marked the 2007 Wimbledon runner-up’s fifth consecutive semifinals appearance at Eastbourne – and the first time she has advanced to the final at this event.
– With her defeats of Stosur and Kvitova, Bartoli now has four Top 10 wins to her name so far in 2011, although the first two were via retirement (Clijsters at Indian Wells, Azarenka here at Eastbourne in quarterfinals).
– Bartoli is projected to remain at No.9 in the new rankings.
– Kvitova was gunning for a fourth singles title in 2011, following wins at Brisbane, Paris [Indoors] and Madrid. She is now 3-1 in finals this season and 4-2 across her career.
– Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik win their third title of 2011 (after Auckland and Doha) and fifth as a team overall. Peschke now boasts 19 doubles titles while Srebotnik has 26.
Final Quotes
Marion Bartoli, 2011 AEGON International singles champion:
“I think we were seven out of the Top 10 players plus Venus and Serena Williams here, so it was definitely a very hard task to win the tournament. It’s just great to come up with a win. Of course I would have been happier to finish in two sets, but Petra fought extremely well, and she deserved to come back. It could have gone either way, and in the end it went my way.”
Petra Kvitova, 2011 AEGON International singles runner-up:
“With the wind, the matches here about fight. It’s the same for both players and if you win, you are playing amazing. For sure it’s a big step to reach the final, but now I have to be focused on Wimbledon… I’m happy that I played many matches here, though, and got a lot of practice for the bigger tournament.”
