While Caroline Woznaki is the world number one she isn’t making much of an effort to impress many tennis minds out there. Yes, she has a great game but she just does everything well. There is no variety in here game or that one shot that she can always count on during the critical points.
Could her window be closing? Maria Sharapova has been rapidly improving since Indian Wells, and beat Caroline in their last match up. Then there are the Williams sisters. We all know they will return at some point, and we all know they need absolutely no preparation in order to win slams. However, Caroline’s game doesn’t match up with the Williams sister’s at all. They over power her and can at times rattle her game to the point where she looks lost out there.
However, does it even matter that she hasn’t won a slam yet? She’s been ranked number one longer than any woman that hasn’t won a slam. I really felt that this season she would win that coveted first slam. However, it seems quite apparent that her window is closing. Most of her success this year has come at tournaments where Kim Clijsters has been absent or has had an early round exit.
This isn’t meant to take anything away from her game, she is a great player and seems to be a very sweet young lady. Tennis fans just want more from her. We want her to prove that she is the number one player in the world.
Two more slams left. Can she get her first at either Wimbledon or the U.S Open and finally silence her critics? I know she can, she just has to play her best tennis and not play as passive as she does at times. Attack Caroline, Attack!
While I’m not inclined to participate in the “is she or is she not a legititmate #1″ debate, as the rankings system works in a very specific and generally accepted way, there is a debate that can be had. And that is, in this case, is the world’s number one player, by rankings, actually the best player in the world. That’s where she has some proving to do.
An in-form Serena would literally wipe the court up with her. An in-form Serena is also a theoretical and a rarity. Therefore, I guess she’s doing what it takes within her current set of peers to stay #1.
The good news for her with regard to the way she became number one (winning so many tiny tournaments) is that when she fails to regain those titles next year, her ranking will come down very slowly, as opposed to losing large chunks of points from failing to defend a Slam title.
