Just watched a slug fest between Taylor Townsend and Shelby Rogers. Taylor T. is 15 years old, originally from Atlanta, Ga and is playing in her first 50k. She is currently residing and training in BOCA at the USTA there.
Wildcard Shelby Rogers is 18 yrs old and trains in Charlotte SC.
Both girls have strong fluid strokes and were both mentally tough throughout the match. The points were long, intense and thrilling to watch!
Taylor won 5-7,7-5,7-6.
A great match for both players!
These young girls are inspiring to watch!

It’s only a stat but one worthy of mention: Of the 16 singles players still alive before Thursday’s second-round play in the Carson USTA Women’s $50,000 Challenger presented by the Farmers Classic, half were American teenagers. Of the eight, two advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals as 15-year-old qualifier Taylor Townsend of Stockbridge, Ga., and 17-year-old Jessica Pegula of Boca Raton, Fla., moved on with big wins Thursday at The Home Depot Center. The future is indeed bright for U.S. women’s tennis. “We’ve had some great performances by the young Americans so far,” tournament director John Lansville said. “I think all of them will make an impact either on the collegiate and pro level over the next few years. Today you definitely saw a glimpse of some of the top young American talent.” Townsend came back to beat one of the teenagers, 2010 USTA National Hardcourts champion and wild-card Shelby Rogers, 18, of Charleston, S.C., 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2). “This is by far my biggest win,” Townsend said. “I’ve practiced with her before and she just killed me but that was on clay. During the third set I kept thinking about what my coach (USTA’s Kathy Rinaldi) keeps drilling into us. This is why we put the work in during fitness. There is a reason why we work so hard in practice and that hard work showed today.” Pegula had a nice win over another one of the U.S. teenagers, 16-year-old Krista Hardebeck of Santa Ana, the No. 7 seeded player, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4). Pegula is being coached by Maria Sharapova’s former coach Michael Joyce, who lives just 10 minutes from Carson in Hermosa Beach. The youngest player left in the draw, Pomona’s Gabby Andrews, 14, took the first set off of No. 6 seeded Teodora Mircic of Serbia, 7-5, before the wind kicked up and seemed to throw off her game as Miric rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 three-set win. Others advancing on Thursday included top-seeded Camila Giorgi of Itlay, No. 2 Alexa Glatch of Newport Beach, No. 3 seeded American Ashley Weinhold, No. 8 seeded American Chichi Scholland former UCLA All-American Yasmin Schnack.
