MARINO REACHES THIRD ROUND AT ROLAND-GARROS

Montreal, May 25, 2011 – Two Canadians were in action today at Roland-Garros after winning their opening round matches at the second Grand Slam event of the season. Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) tried to extend their stay in Paris and reach the third round.

Mission accomplished for Marino who defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. She took a set to adapt to the unorthodox style of her lefty opponent and then never looked back. This marks the first time in Marino’s career that she has reached the third round of a Grand Slam after advancing to the second round on two previous occassions at the Australian and U.S. Opens. This is also the fourth consecutive year that a Canadian has been in the third round at Roland-Garros. Wozniak had accomplished the feat each of the last three years. Marino will face 2009 French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round.

Wozniak falls to Wozniacki

For her part, Wozniak would have to pass the ultimate test to join her compatriot in the third round as she went up against World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark on the famed Court Philippe Chatrier. Despite an inspired performance, Wozniak fell 6-3, 7-6(6). The second set was especially close as Wozniak held three set points in the tiebreak.

“I haven’t had a lot of match play in the past few months and that probably showed in the important points today,” Wozniak said after the match. “I didn’t always make the right choice of play, but I know it will only be matter of time. I’m still smiling and after all that I have been through the last few months, it is going to take a lot more than a tennis match to wipe the smile from my face. I’m happy with I played and the way I competed today and it’s a good sign my next tournaments.”

Wozniak will now head to Rome, Italy to compete in a $50,000 Challenger next week.

Montréal, le 25 mai 2011 – Deux Canadiennes étaient toujours en lice à Roland-Garros après avoir complété tous les matchs de premier tour. En effet, Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) et Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) tentaient aujourd’hui de prolonger leur séjour à Paris et ainsi atteindre le troisième tour.

Mission accomplie pour l’une d’entre elles puisque Marino est parvenue à passer au tour suivant avec une victoire de 2-6, 6-3 et 6-3 contre l’Espagnole Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. L’athlète de Vancouver a mis une manche à s’adapter au style de jeu peu orthodoxe de son adversaire gauchère. Elle a toutefois pris les devants dans la seconde manche et n’a jamais regardé derrière par la suite. C’est la première fois de sa carrière que Marino atteint le troisième tour d’une épreuve du Grand Chelem, elle qui s’était inclinée au deuxième tour aux Internationaux des États-Unis et aux Internationaux d’Australie. C’est également la quatrième année consécutive qu’une Canadienne parvient à se hisser à la troisième ronde du tournoi de Roland-Garros. En effet, Wozniak avait réussi l’exploit les trois dernières années. Marino affrontera maintenant la Russe Svetlana Kuznetsova. Cette dernière avait été sacrée championne à la porte d’Auteuil en 2009.

Wozniak s’incline contre Wozniacki

De son côté, Wozniak avait fort à faire pour rejoindre sa compatriote puisqu’elle croisait le fer avec nulle autre que la numéro un mondiale, Caroline Wozniacki. Le match était d’ailleurs présenté sur le court Philippe Chatrier. Malgré une très belle performance, la Blainvilloise a dû s’avouer vaincue par la marque de 6-3 et 7-6 (6). La seconde manche aura été particulièrement serrée, Wozniak ayant même trois balles de manche lors du bris d’égalité. « Je n’ai pas encore beaucoup de matchs derrière la cravate et ça a probablement paru aujourd’hui lors des points importants. Je ne faisais pas toujours les bons choix de jeu mais je sais que ce n’est qu’une question de temps. » affirmait Wozniak après son match. « Je garde le sourire. Après tout ce que j’ai vécu au cours des derniers mois, ça prendra beaucoup plus qu’un match de tennis pour me faire perdre mon sourire. Je suis contente de la manière dont j’ai joué et dont je me suis battue aujourd’hui et je crois que c’est de bon augure pour la suite des choses. »

Wozniak se dirigera maintenant vers Rome en Italie où elle disputera un Challenger doté d’une bourse de 50 000$ dès la semaine prochaine.
