Marino opened against Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine, ranked no. 133 on the WTA rankings. Despite her
current standing, Bondarenko was a dangerous opponent for the Canadian considering that she has been
ranked as high as no. 29 in the world in 2009. Marino utilized her favourite weapon, her serve, to come away
with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory. She maintained a 67 percent first serve percentage and converted four break
points. She also hit 23 winners compared to just 13 unforced errors. With the win, Marino has now reached the
second round at each of the last three Majors and will try to overcome the round two hurdle for the first time in
her career after losing to Venus Williams at the U.S. Open and Francesca Schiavone in Australia. This also
marks the fourth straight year that a Canadian woman has reached the second round at the French Open.
Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) has accomplished the feat three years in a row.
Marino awaits the winner of the match between 19th seeded Shahar Peer and Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez
Sanchez.
