The qualifying rounds wrapped up on Friday at Roland-Garros and four Canadians
will be in the main draw for the second Grand Slam of the season in Paris, France.
Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON) and Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) both qualified for the main draw
with convincing wins in their final qualifying matches. Dancevic defeated Victor Crivoi of Romania 6-1, 6-3 while
Wozniak took care of ninth-seeded American Jamie Hampton 7-5, 6-3. This means that there will be four
Canadians in the main draw for the second time in the last three Majors. There were also four Canadians in the
U.S. Open main draw last fall.
“I am really pleased with my level considering that I didn’t play any warm up tournaments and this is my first
Grand Slam of the season,” Wozniak said after her win. “I have worked on a lot of things in my game over the
last three weeks and I feel like I am improving with every match.”
The qualifiers on the women’s side have been placed in the draw and Wozniak, who is playing her first
tournament since March after battling another bout with forearm tendonitis, will face Junri Namigata, ranked no.
120 on the WTA rankings, in the opening round. Dancevic drew Italian Simone Bolelli, ranked no. 129 on the
ATP World Tour rankings.
Meanwhile, Canada’s two direct entrants into the main draw, Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) and Milos
Raonic (Thornhill, ON) also learned the identity of their first round opponents today. Marino will face Kateryna
Bondarenko of the Ukraine, ranked no. 113 in the world while Raonic, seeded 26th, will play world no. 94
Michael Berrer of Germany. Raonic is not only playing in his first French Open main draw, but this is also the
first time he is seeded at a Grand Slam event.
