Kvitova upsets Clijsters in Paris

Czech surprise package Petra Kvitova raced past Kim Clijsters in the Open GDF SUEZ final. Kvitova won the final in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Kvitova, this weeks number four seed nearly didn’t make it to the final after facing match point down in the second round against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. She was also down a break in the third set against Yanina Wickmayer in the quarters. The only easy match for Kvitova was in the semifinal when she crushed American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-2, 6-0.

“I’m very happy to win my second title of the year, and it doesn’t get much better than beating the new World No.1 in the final. I thought I played very well. I played my game fast and agressive,” Kvitova said.

Kvitova has now won three WTA titles in her career.

Clijsters congratulated her opponent and simply said, “My opponent was better today.”

In the doubles final, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Saughnessey beat Vera Dushevina and Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Mattek-Sands has got nine doubles titles and Shaughnessy has got seventeen. This was their first title player together.

Mattek-Sands said, “We’ve had a great year so far and it’s great to win our first title together. I was a little tired so thanks to her (Meghann) for carrying me through.”
