The career firsts just keep coming for Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON). On Friday, he reached his maiden ATP semifinal at the SAP Open in San Jose, California, an ATP World Tour 250 event.
Raonic defeated fellow rising Richard Berankis of Lithuania, ranked no. 74 in the world, 6-4, 7-6(2) to reach his first career semi where he awaits the winner of the quarter-final match between France’s Gael Monfils and American Tim Smyczek.
The 20-year-old Canadian has yet to drop a set en route to the semifinals. He fired 12 aces past Berankis today to bring his tournament total to 45 and lost just five of his first serve points.
With the win, Raonic becomes the first Canadian ATP semifinalist since Frank Dancevic in the summer of 2009 at Indianapolis. His performance will also move him up the world rankings to around no. 75.
