In the latest video in the Davis Cup Idols series, Paul Haarhuis recalls his Davis Cup playing days when he represented Netherlands in a competition that he still holds close to his heart.
Haarhuis made his Davis Cup debut in 1990 and played every year until he retired in 2005, setting Dutch records for the most years played (16), most ties played (27), and most doubles wins (16).
During this time the Netherlands enjoyed its best ever Davis Cup result, when the team recorded wins over Spain and Germany to reach the 2001 World Group semifinals, eventually losing 3-2 at home against France.
“We all wanted to play Davis Cup. It was a big thrill to be playing for your country. I got the feeling of being part of a team,” said Haarhuis.
“It’s a great format. I love to see future generations be part of a great event like this.”
