In a special exhibition match, current ATP World Tour star Gael Monfils beat former No.1 Pete Sampras in an entertaining two-setter, 76(4) 64. After losing a 40-minute first set, Sampras broke for 3-2 in the second set and held two points for a 4-2 lead, but Monfils bounced back to win four of the last five games and close out the 14-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets.
“I’ve played a lot of good movers in my day, but Gael’s the real deal,” Sampras said of the No.12-ranked Frenchman. “I was holding my own out there though. That was the most I’ve served and volleyed lately. I’m happy the way I played.”
Sampras won the SAP Open twice, in back-to-back years in 1996 and 1997
