After falling in qualifying in his first four attempts at making an ATP World Tour main draw, it was fifth time lucky for Colombian Robert Farah, who beat Luka Gregorc in the final round of qualies on Sunday, 75 57 62. Farah, the No.1 seed in the qualies, had been pushed to three sets in his first qualifying match as well.
Also emerging from the qualifying draw were its No.2, No.3 and No.6 seeds, Alex Kuznetsov and Jesse Levine of the US and Roman Borvanov of Moldova. Ukrainian-born Kuznetsov isn’t playing his first ATP World Tour main draw but is playing his first here in San Jose (falling in 2009 qualies); Canadian-born Levine, a former Top 100 player, is playing his first main draw since last summer’s grass court season. He reached the second round in his only other appearance here, in 2008 (falling to James Blake).
Like Farah, Borvanov will be playing his first ATP World Tour main draw (although the Moldovan had been stopped in qualies twice as many times as the Colombian – eight times).
