PBZ Zagreb Indoors lost both top seeds on Friday as Croats Marin Cilic and Ivan Ljubicic lost their singles matches. Florian Mayer (pictured) from Germany defeated Cilic by 6:3, 6:4 and Ivan Dodig defeated countryman Ivan Ljubicic by 6:4, 6:4. It also means that tournament will have new winner on Sunday as neither of remaining players won Zagreb title before.
Mayer won against Cilic in Wimbledon last year in straight sets and did the same in Zagreb. Cilic started strong, having two break points in the opening game, but Mayer responded with 12 consecutive points, securing 3:0 lead. German produced some tricky shots in the second set as well and Cilic lost first match after having 11 consecutive singles victories in Zagreb. He won event in 2009 and 2010. Mayer improved to 9-3 win-loss record this season and now only Roger Federer has more singles wins (10) than him in 2011.
Dodig reached his first career semifinals after beating Ljubicic, whom he lost in both previous encounters.
“This is the biggest win of my life and my biggest result in whole career”, Dodig said. He now has six singles victories in Zagreb and five of them were against Top 50 players.
Ljubicic had four break points but failed to convert them: he had one when Dodig served for first set at 5:4 and three more at 3:4 in the second set.
